Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review technology.
Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon this year.
Athletes will gain the right to contest specific calls made by the official, following the protocol currently in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
The new system will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This step follows just a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to re-examine other decisions, such as:
- If a ball has double-bounced.
- If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
- Possible hindrance end of a point.
Notably, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can initiate.
Case in Point
A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.
The British player admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at all of its events.
Other Changes
Another innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This solves instances where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.
Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
