Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when dozens of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves especially affected by weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and participants so that these practices become economically unsustainable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
