Larian Studios Reveal a Latest Divinity, Calling it Their Biggest RPG Yet

The anticipation surrounding this year's gaming ceremony has been intense, notably after host Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious photo of a strange statue. The question has been revealed. The acclaimed developer is developing a completely new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer that included intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal opening of infernal gates.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio stated ahead of time that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not on the cards right now.

However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This distinction suggests that the team might be crafting a real-time experience as opposed to another tactical title. For now, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is universally respected and many say it kicked off the modern wave of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by detailed worlds, choice-driven narratives, and complex character building—elements that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the immense freedom given to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs only possible by choosing a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.

The series is also wonderfully permissive, enabling players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be approached in diverse methods, sometimes in lateral fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you heeded something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.

More to Come

It is this design philosophy that allow people to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games of all time. Now, players can get ready for another adventure in this groundbreaking franchise.
