Key Takeaways after the Champions Cup's Initial Set of Fixtures

Now that the opening salvo of the 2025-26 Champions Cup concluded, we examine the key revelations emerging from the fixtures.

Gallic supremacy has defined the competition in recent seasons, with the previous five victors all hailing from France's Top 14. However, the opening round showcased multiple statement victories from potential challengers.

Bordeaux Look Set to Go Back-to-Back

Current holders Bordeaux Begles were imperious in Europe last season, dominating Toulouse in the semi-final and then Northampton in the grand finale.

Currently sitting sixth in the domestic standings, questions have been asked about their capacity to retain the feat this season. But, in round one, Bordeaux sent a message that they are well-positioned of achieving another trophy with a points-laden away victory in South Africa.

Handed a tough assignment at the Bulls' fortress against a formidable Bulls side including internationals like Willie le Roux, Handre Pollard, and Canan Moodie, they were behind 33-22 at the break.

Yet, as champions do, they displayed their class in the second half, storming back to claim a 46-33 victory – holding the Bulls without a point after the interval.

France international machines Damian Penaud and World Player of the Year nominee Louis Bielle-Biarrey were among the try-scorers. Any side with that pair on the edges is a threat against any opponent.

Impressive Bath Appear Equipped of Challenging for the Title

Bath's sole success in the Champions Cup came almost three decades ago. Since that time, they have arguably not been more strongly positioned to add a second star.

The current English champions are leading the way in the league after six games and will be hoping to translate that form into continental competition – especially after a shocking early departure the previous season.

Johann van Graan's side looked a highly composed and balanced unit in their 40-14 victory against Munster, who are highly placed in the URC.

They marry creative spark – sealing the try-scoring point within 20 minutes at the Rec – with resolute defending, restraining their opponents at bay when they attempted a fightback.

With the likes of Finn Russell and Ben Spencer in the half-backs and strength in depth all over the team, they must be viewed as genuine challengers for a continental title since 1998.

Bath's defining match in the group stage a year ago occurred in the second round, an agonising 22-21 setback at Benetton with a rotated team.

After winning a domestic championship to their name and top domestically again, Van Graan could be inclined to place greater emphasis on the Champions Cup this season.

Glasgow Deal Sale a Major Blow

You will find quality outfits in every pool, but the first group appears poised to be one of the most competitive.

In the existing pool system, a lot is emphasized regarding winning your home games, which is why Glasgow's away victory at Sale on Friday evening might just prove crucial.

The team from Scotland were 14-0 down after 20 minutes but came back strongly, and two tries during the beginning of the second period gave them a valuable five points.

With this result, they provided their prospects of qualification a major lift and, conversely, dealt a damaging defeat to the Sharks.

With the French giants – commanding 56-19 conquerors of the Sharks – and Saracens, who easily overcame Clermont, in the same section, we can expect high-stakes drama.

And what of Glasgow's traditional foes Edinburgh? They delivered one of their finest displays in Europe in a long time to surprise former champions Toulon 33-20, on a excellent weekend for the Scottish game.

Could Ioane the Final Piece of the Leinster Quest?

When considering a contender you would predict to be challenging at the business end of the Champions Cup, it would be European giants Leinster.

Yet in recent campaigns it has not worked out, as they have promised much but delivered little. Finalists three years in a row between 2022-24, they looked overwhelming favourites last season after following up a 62-0 thrashing of Harlequins in the round of 16 with a 52-0 demolition over Glasgow in the quarter-final.

It was hoped that All Black star Jordie Barrett would be the key player to secure the title, but they were caught out and endured a shock loss to Northampton Saints in the semi-final.

This year they are trying the All Black experiment again, this time with Rieko Ioane, who registered a key pass on his debut in Saturday's 45-28 victory against Harlequins.

Could Ioane be the player to bring the trophy back to Ireland for the first time since 2018?

Stormers Appear Equipped to Compete

Since the South African sides became part of the Champions Cup in 2022-23, the best performance by any of them is the quarter-finals, and in the last campaign none of them managed to make it out of the pool phase, with plenty of squads not at full strength fielded.

Is this the year that turns around? The Stormers are leading the URC and started their continental journey with a 26-17 away win at Bayonne on Friday.

The post-match comments were positive too, with the squad and staff expressing their ambition, and the likes of South African internationals Cobus Reinach, Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, and Damian Willemse absent for the first match.

The Stormers seem the best bet for a South African side to go deep into the tournament, yet don't count out the Sharks and Bulls, who each suffered defeat this weekend but did face Toulouse and Bordeaux respectively.

Saints and Pau Deliver a Memorable Match

There were multiple possibilities for game of the weekend, and the Northampton vs. Pau game was a leading candidate.

Pau have been having a superb season, guided by Pumas Julian Montoya and Facundo Isa and veteran playmaker Dan Robson.

They are presently in second place in the French championship and the atmosphere was electric at the Stade du Hameau|their home ground|Pau's
