European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
